MEETING: Tuesday October 14, 2014

SPEAKER:  Jeffrey Beggs

TOPIC: Life Before & After ICBC: Differences between public and private practice

This month’s speaker is Jeffrey Beggs.  Jeff is an associate lawyer with Victoria firm Jones Emery Hargreaves Swan.  However he began his legal career in 1984 in Saskatchewan. After articles, he spent his first ten years in general practice where he gained valuable experience in many facets of the practice of law before becoming a partner.  In 1994 Jeff relocated to British Columbia with his wife and two children and took up a civil litigation practice focusing on motor vehicle and general litigation.

In 2000, Jeff accepted a position as in-house counsel with the Victoria office of ICBC specializing in defence related motor vehicle litigation. He was soon promoted to manager of the Victoria office and acted in that capacity for thirteen years.  Jeff brings a pragmatic approach to the conduct of litigation and its resolution owing to his unique and practical experience. He will discuss differences between public and private practice and hopefully provide some tips on dealing with ICBC.

President’s Notes

I received many positive comments on last month’s speaker, Mitchell Selly, who presented on Consent Orders and Chambers Applications.  Thank you Mitch!

Please note that November and December’s meetings will be held on the FIRST Tuesday of the month, so November 4th and December 2nd.

November’s speaker will be Riley LaLiberte of Stewart Title Insurance who will give an overview of title insurance including lender coverage versus owner coverage, potential problems with title and how title insurance assists, etc.

Our annual Silent Auction is fast approaching!  Mark your calendars for Tuesday, December 2nd – this year’s auction proceeds will go to the Victoria Brain Injury Society. You may or may not already know that the Victoria Brain Injury Society gives survivors and their loved ones that which the medical professional cannot: long term support through the many steps, both backward and forward, of life after brain injury. From those just released from hospital, to those who have lived with their injuries for decades, survivors consistently express gratitude and relief once they’ve walked through the Society’s doors.  For more information please visit their website at www.vbis.ca.
